Soccer Coach Weekly : BALL WINNERS ‘FOUR S’s OF DEFENDING’ – SPRINT, SLOW DOWN, SIDE-ON, STEAL

Sprint, slow down, side-on and steal

They are the 'four S's' of defending. This week's session plan, from Paul Musacchio, is made up of three activities based around those key points that will turn your team into born ball-winners.

Jeremy Tosaya, our podcast guest a couple of weeks ago, is back again - this time to discuss the problem he feels areas of the US has with developing flair players. Tosaya, who is the director of coaching for Nebraska State Soccer, says he believes the lack of freeplay soccer is possibly suffocating attempts to produce the next Christian Pulisic.

If you have made the journey from youth soccer into a coach of senior adult players, you will know the transition can be difficult. Charlie Bews knows what it is like to do both and has written this week's coach's column on his experiences. He explains how you can bridge the gap by remembering that the basics of coaching don't vary much, no matter what age or level you are at.

Finally, our Q&A this week is with James Wagenschutz, the former assistant men’s soccer coach at Colorado College and Regis University. He is now a coach educator for United Soccer Coaches and the USSF, and runs his own consultancy, working with MLS players and Olympians. He talks to Steph Fairbairn about the art of coaching the coaches.
