A coaching manual and education course focusing on small sided games has never been so relevant and applicable as it is today.

The short and long term effects of the US Soccer Federation Player Development initiatives are far reaching, impacting all youth clubs and coaches.

Arguably the most significant decision in a decade, the youth soccer landscape is changing rapidly for coaches and administrators.

In 2015/16 NSCAA offered an eLearning series dedicated to preparing players, teams and clubs to address the tactical, technical and logistical opportunities presented in this new era in youth soccer.

Coaches attending the ‘NSCAA Small Sided Games Diploma – 4v4, 7v7 and 9v9’ are treated to 4 on-demand presentations including 42 training activities to support the new playing formats.

This manual was developed to support the eLearning series. Critically, we will discuss how clubs can establish a new ‘learning pathway’ and progress players along the player development continuum.

We will also address potential formations and philosophies to ensure teams are prepared for the attacking and defending challenges of 4v4, 7v7 and 9v9. Features of this series include:

• 42 training activities expertly illustrated.

• 3 possible formations for each small sided game format - with attacking and defending shape.

• Practical coaching methods a coach can employ to facilitate player learning.

• Attacking and defending principles with 4v4, 7v7 and 9v9.

• Strengths and challenges of different team formations:

• 4v4 – 0-2-2; 0-1-3; 0-1-2-1 etc.

• 7v7 – 1-3-2-1; 1-2-1-3; 1-3-1-2 etc.

• 9v9 – 1-4-3-1; 1-2-3-3; 1-2-4-2 etc.

• Review U.S. Soccer’s mandates - age and player grouping, field sizes and equipment.

• Practical steps a club and coach can take to educate parents of the changes and opportunities. Our eLearning mantra is ‘Education.

Where you want it. When you want it. How you want it.’
